Hair Transplantation in Gdansk – The History and Development of the FUE Technique

FUE hair transplantation is an increasingly popular solution for people experiencing hair loss. The procedure can provide a long-term restoration of dense, natural-looking hair. One of the most effective and widely chosen techniques is FUE.

What Is a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplantation involves harvesting healthy follicular units (grafts) from the donor area — typically the back and sides of the scalp — and precisely implanting them into areas affected by hair loss (the recipient area). This makes it possible to effectively restore hair in areas where it has been permanently lost.

The Two Main Hair Transplantation Techniques

Over the years, two primary techniques have been developed:

  • STRIP (FUT) technique – the older, traditional method.
  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) – a modern, minimally invasive technique that has become the dominant method in hair transplantation.

The STRIP Technique – The Early Days of Hair Transplantation

The earliest hair transplant procedures were performed using the Strip technique. It involved surgically removing a strip of skin from the back of the scalp, typically around 2 cm wide and up to 30 cm long, followed by closing the wound with sutures. The extracted strip was then dissected into individual follicular grafts.

Although the procedure itself was relatively quick for the surgeon, it was considerably more invasive for the patient. Recovery could be lengthy and was often associated with altered sensation, a linear scar and significant discomfort. Patients could be limited in their ability to return to normal daily activities for an extended period of time.

The Birth of FUE – A Revolution in Hair Transplantation

A major breakthrough came with the development of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). Instead of removing a strip of skin, individual follicular units are extracted using specialized instruments known as punches.

FUE hair transplantation was introduced in the early 2000s and gained significant recognition through the work of pioneers such as Dr. John Cole. The technique began gaining wider popularity in Europe around 2008.

What Was FUE Like in Its Early Days?

Initially, sharp punches with diameters of approximately 0.7–1.0 mm were used, often mounted in manual holders. Grafts were harvested manually — the surgeon would score around each follicular unit and then remove the graft using forceps.

This was a highly time-consuming process. During the early years, approximately 1,000 grafts could often be harvested during a single procedure, which could take 8–10 hours.

Many proponents of the Strip technique were initially skeptical of FUE, considering it a temporary trend. However, clinical experience quickly demonstrated the significant potential of the new technique.

The Evolution of FUE Technology – From Manual Extraction to Motorized Devices

A major technological breakthrough came with the development and adoption of motorized extraction devices, which introduced rotational and oscillating movements. These devices reduced the physical demands on the surgeon while significantly improving the speed and efficiency of graft extraction.

Over time, practitioners began using:

  • Blunt and hybrid punches designed to help reduce graft trauma
  • Different punch designs and configurations, including trumpet-shaped and serrated punches
  • Advanced motorized FUE systems
  • Increasingly sophisticated extraction technologies

Today, experienced hair restoration specialists can perform FUE graft harvesting at rates of up to approximately 2,000 grafts per hour, depending on the technique, patient characteristics and clinical setup. Procedures involving 3,000–4,000 grafts have also become common in appropriately selected patients.

Hair Transplantation in Gdansk – Modern Medicine at a High Standard

The FUE technique continues to evolve. Today, some of the greatest challenges lie not simply in the technology itself, but in developing an appropriate long-term strategy for patients with advanced hair loss and limited donor reserves.

If you are considering a hair transplant in Gdansk, it is important to choose a clinic with expertise in modern FUE techniques. Minimal invasiveness, the absence of a linear scar, relatively short recovery time and natural-looking results are among the key advantages associated with FUE.
